Abstract Three Graces

Abstract Three Graces

Carved Cherry Tree

The purpose of this project was to experiment with wood carving for the first time. I wanted to  create objects that are physical representations of three women as they are. I wanted to carve three separate pieces that would work together as a cohesive whole. My intent is that the three pieces will interact with each other in a physical way by linking hands and the bases creating a collective base that visually looks like one surface. My guiding theme for this series was to attempt to depict the female form as its own experiential being and the female body as a container or vessel for itself and the experiences it can hold. These pieces evolved through the carving process as the wood showed its own separate identity through its grain and checking. The carving process itself led me to shaping the forms in a way that displayed the wood grain by leaving more material than I felt I should.
